All Eyes on Parliament as Monsoon Session Commences Today, Set to Run Till August 13

Date:

The Monsoon Session of Parliament begins today, Monday. Both the government and the opposition are fully prepared for this session, which runs until August 13. Along with discussions on key bills, there is also a possibility of uproar in the House. Nineteen sittings are scheduled during this period.

Appeal for cooperation at the all-party meeting

On Sunday—the day before the session began—the central government convened an all-party meeting. During the meeting, which lasted nearly three hours, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju urged all parties to ensure the smooth functioning of the House proceedings. Leaders from 40 parties participated in the meeting. Rijiju said, “The meeting went well. Everyone expressed their views. It is the responsibility of us all to ensure the House runs without disruption.”

Key bills the government may introduce

The government is set to introduce several important bills during this session. These include:

– Income Tax Bill
– Vande Mataram Bill
– Bill to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court
– Bill related to MSME development
– Birth and Death Registration Bill
– Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill
– Viksit Bharat Education Establishment Bill

The situation regarding the introduction of the Women’s Reservation Bill and the Delimitation Bill remains unclear. If a two-thirds majority can be secured, the government will attempt to pass these bills.

A busy day for foreign policy as well

Today is also significant from the perspective of foreign policy. President Droupadi Murmu will meet her counterpart during her visit to Moldova. Meanwhile, Panama’s Foreign Minister has arrived in New Delhi, where discussions are expected to focus on giving new momentum to bilateral relations between India and Panama.
